The Activity:  Adopt-A-BAirmen

When: Various times through-out the year when Davis-Monthan personnel are deployed.

Where: At Davis-Monthan AFB or at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson, Ariz. This allows us to offer a family event just before the military member deploys.

About the Event: This is a tangible way for members of the Tucson community to show support for the military families at Davis-Monthan AFB. For $25, you can sponsor a bear and make a huge difference in a child’s life.

Picture an Airman serving in Afghanistan and his daughter, little Sarah, is missing her father. She cannot reach him by phone because he is in a remote location and it could be very dangerous for him to attempt contact. Mom tries to console her, but all little Sarah wants to do is hear her Daddy’s voice.

With the success of this program, little Sarah will have her father’s voice recorded on a chip inside of a bear that she and her father and her mother all made together prior to her father deploying. She can hug the bear any time she wants, whether happy or sad, to hear her Daddy’s voice saying, “Hi sweetie, Daddy loves you and misses you and is looking forward to seeing you again soon.” Imagine the impact of little Sarah hearing Daddy’s voice and being able to hug that bear!

This program aims to help a child with a deployed parent to better understand and cope with mommy or daddy’s absence. With your help, we can make this program a huge success and impact many young lives!

We aim to conduct four (4) BAirmen Adoption Events yearly.  Two will be in conjunction with COPE and two others between.  The cost to host a single Adoption event is approximately $2500 or $10,000 annually for the four events.  We have partnered with Arizona Sonora Desert Museum who provides the venue and some storage for the Adopt-A-Bear Program.

About the Event: The families of deployed military members at Davis-Monthan AFB can attend a special ‘big tent’ event on the July 4th. The Activity: Junior Expeditionary Force

When: Once a year typically in the fall between the months of October and December.

Where: Davis-Monthan AFB.

About the activity: This activity is designed to give the children of deploying military members the opportunity to take part in a mock deployment just like what their deploying parent goes through. From the initial deployment or mobility line, to a simulated flight to their deployed location – where they experience educational venues provided by military security forces, medical personnel, dining facilities, chapel, explosive ordinance, fire department and fitness activities in a tent city. The children then depart the tent city and return to home on a second simulated flight. When returning home they are greeted by a big Welcome Home celebration with refreshments.

Costs: Program costs include providing a tee-shirt, backpack and dog tag to each child along with a snack during their ‘deployment.’ The tee-shirt is their uniform; the backpack is their mobility bag. The program is expected to serve 250 children at a cost of $22 per child or $5,500.

Vendors can agree to give military members and their family a free item or charge other community members attending. The whole community will be invited, especially those who donate the money for the coins which are given.

The day begins with a breakfast and a keynote speaker.

Costs: Our donation assists Airmen to attend the breakfast as an encouragement to learn more about how to take care of their financial needs so they do not become dependent upon other free-grant/loan programs. All workshops help family members learn how to communicate with each other cope with the special situations and issues which transpire just prior to deployments, during deployment and then upon the family reuniting when the military member returns.

Costs: Typically $10,000 or more a year.

The Activity: Neighbors Cares Program

Neighbors Cares program along with the students of Your Guidance Office ran a pilot event in Tucson in 2009. The Neighbors Cares program, created by Brian and Stacey Beebe, promotes volunteerism and community support. The 2011-2012 events will be putting collection boxes in the community for the Adopt-A-BAirman program hosted by Tucson Community Cares Foundation. Your Guidance Office students will monitor the collection boxes through December 2010.

Tucson is home to the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The Airmen and their families are our Tucson neighbors who will benefit from the Neighbors Cares program.

Your Guidance Office works with college-bound students and students in college to prepare for and gain admittance into the best schools. They also help them obtain significant free funding to help pay for college. Your Guidance Office also offers volunteer opportunities and community involvement to their students. As a result, Your Guidance Office families in Tucson reached out to the Tucson community to collect much needed personal items for our deployed Airmen. They have partnered with the Tucson Community Cares Foundation for advice, financial support and to coordinate the shipping of the care packages.

"When we brought the idea to our Tucson students they were excited to know that they would be helping Airmen who needed to know their community cares about them,” said Brian Beebe, General Manager of Your Guidance Office and project director along with his wife Stacey. “Colleges want the students who demonstrate community involvement and leadership. We are very proud of our students and our Airman will be grateful for their contributions of time and effort."

Care package collection was completed in December and then the items were shipped to deployed Airmen by the Tucson Community Cares Foundation. Students located drop points throughout Tucson and attended events such as the St. Philips Plaza Farmers Market.

The students met for a packaging event alongside Tucson Community Cares volunteers after the collections were made to prepare the care boxes for shipping. The Neighbors Cares program, Your Guidance Office students, and Christian Home Educators Tucson - Northwest raised more than  300 lbs. of personal care items for our deployed Airmen.

Tucson Community Cares has offered to fund 50 percent of the cost of shipping. The cost to ship one box is approximately $15.

"This is an excellent opportunity for our students to experience a very unique connection to their military neighbors,” said Stacey Beebe. “It’s also a wonderful way for our active duty Airman to connect with the off-base community. The program will demonstrate to our Airmen and their families that Tucson’s middle, high school and college students are here to support them."
